Overhanging Tree Branches

The situation

You rent a house with a small driveway. Large branches from your neighbour's gum tree hang over it, and twice this month falling branches have scratched your car. You get on well with them and do not want to cause offence. Speak to your neighbour: explain the problem politely, and suggest a fair way to deal with the branches.

Model answer

Hi, have you got a second? You know the big gum tree in your yard? A few of the larger branches hang right over our driveway, and twice this month some have come down and scratched my car. I know it's just the tree being a tree, but I'm a bit worried about the next windy day. Would you be open to getting those overhanging branches trimmed back? I'd be happy to split the cost of an arborist, or help you with the clean-up on the weekend. Thanks, I appreciate you hearing me out.
