How to answer: structure and key points

Essay outline

1. Introduction: restate the question in your own words and give your position.
2. Body paragraph 1: your main reason, with an example.
3. Body paragraph 2: a second reason, or the other side and why it is weaker.
4. Conclusion: restate your position in one or two sentences.
5. Stay on the topic: a response that misses the topic scores zero on every trait.

An outline for this prompt

• The question: Do the drawbacks of tourism for a nation outweigh the gains? Say how strongly you agree, using examples.
• Position: I partly disagree: tourism usually brings more benefits, but only when it is managed carefully.
• Paragraph 1: Benefits: jobs, income for local businesses and money for roads and services. Example: a coastal town where hotels and restaurants employ many young people.
• Paragraph 2: Drawbacks: crowding, pollution, higher prices and damage to local culture. Explain how limits on visitor numbers or tourist taxes can reduce these problems.
• Conclusion: Restate that well-planned tourism gives more than it takes, and give one key condition.

V2 asks for a balanced discussion of both sides in poorer countries, and V3 asks whether harms equal gains there, so weigh both equally.
