Check microphone

Choose Check microphone to record a short local clip, then stop and play it back. Listen for a clear voice, clipped sounds and background noise. Your browser will ask for microphone access. The clip stays in this tab, is not scored or uploaded, and is cleared when you leave.

JavaScript and microphone permission are needed for this optional check. You can also use your device’s voice recorder.

What a speaking practice estimate means

Pronunciation concerns intelligible sounds and stress; fluency concerns rhythm and connected phrases. Speaking faster is not a substitute for either. RealPTE feedback is a practice estimate, not calibrated to Pearson results. The microphone check itself assigns no score.

Questions students ask

How many speaking task types are in PTE Core?

These PTE Core speaking tips cover the 5 speaking task types: check your microphone, match the task’s purpose and practise clear, connected speech with Core timings.

Do I have to copy a native accent?

Focus on intelligible sounds, appropriate word stress and connected phrases. The Pearson criteria describe pronunciation and fluency; copying an accent alone does not demonstrate them.

Does Check microphone send my voice anywhere?

No. This optional check records and plays back a clip within this browser tab. It does not call the scoring product or upload the clip.

Can I use Academic speaking rules for Core?

Check the Core instruction for each task. Some names and formats overlap, but counts and scoring can differ, especially Respond to a Situation.
